I've been a registered architect for 23 years and a business owner for the last 16.
Here's what I love about architecture: Design matters.
Design matters to families when they're home getting ready for work and school, when they're coming home to crash after a long day, and when people come together in the evening and on precious weekends.
Design matters to businesses because businesses are run by people. People work better when they are supported by clever and useful surroundings. Business clients are people, too, who respond to thoughtful environments. I think that people look at the care businesses take of themselves and their own people, and transfer that level of throughtfulness into the services they imagine they will receive.
Design matters to cultural organizations because their buildings are where we go when we're looking for inspiration and entertainment. I include churches, temples, fine art and performing art spaces, theaters, landscape pavilions and all the support spaces in this enjoyable category.
Design matters when we're living everyday life. It matters when we drop off the kids at school or day care and want the best for them there. It matters when we sit in a meeting or at a desk or when we go to the gym. It matters when we sit in the doctor's waiting room and it matters when we stand in line at the bank.
When good environmental things happen it isn't an accident. Someone has thought about how to shape a great experience. The most fun an architect has is thinking on a client's behalf, and then, following a well-ordered construction process, adding one's personal insight and creativity into the mix. The saying "Architecture is The Art of Building" is more than an adage, it is my joyous career.
