The preliminary stages of master planning for the Mount Saint Joseph-Saint Elizabeth facility involved producing several design alternatives with issues of cost, feasibility, and efficiency in mind. Extensive data collection and building analyses were performed to assess the functional and physical state of the existing structures. Planning, building, and zoning codes were also addressed.
Three schemes of varying complexities were developed. The first design called for preservation of the existing facility, with changes made only within the interior. The second scheme modified the blueprint of the existing buildings, reorganizing access and function. The third (and most dramatic) scheme presented an entirely new facility altogether. Shaped like a four-pointed star in plan, this proposal allocated each wing/floor to a particular function and incorporates the site into the facility through multiple semi-private triangular gardens. |
