A new Sixth Floor was added to the La Salle Building of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory to house a new library, chapel, and outdoor terrace. Selective renovations were made to the existing structure, utilities, and certain classroom areas to accommodate the new construction.
The high school library is composed of a reading room, three conference rooms, the Founders’ Room, a librarian’s office, a work room and a computer network office. The primary design goal was the creation of an environment to inspire learning, creativity and personal development. Fundamental to the achievement of this goal were the manipulation of light and the appropriate use of materials.
The library is a surprise for the first time visitor. It is entered through a tall cylindrical space containing the circulation counter that gives the visitor his visual bearings. The reading room is a bright, lofty space washed with light from the windows along the north and south sides, and from the skylight that runs along the spine of the curved roof.
